In his role as deputy chief of staff and senior advisor to Bush, Rove oversaw the strategic planning, political affairs, public liaison and intergovernmental affairs efforts of the White House.

He previously served as chief strategist for the Bush for President Campaign. For 18 years prior to that, Rove was president of Karl Rove & Company, an Austin-based public affairs firm that worked for Republican candidates, nonpartisan causes and nonprofit groups. His clients have included more than 75 Republican U.S. Senate, Congressional and gubernatorial candidates in 24 states, as well as the Moderate Party of Sweden.

The Colorado native attended the University of Utah, the University of Texas at Austin and George Mason University. He has taught at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and in the journalism department at the University of Texas at Austin and was also a faculty member at the Salzburg Seminar.

He was a member of the Board of International Broadcasting, which oversaw operations of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty, and served on the board of the McDonald Observatory before entering government.
