John Lawrence is a pediatric surgeon and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont.   He has had a long-standing interest in global health, and issues related to universal access to surgical care.  He has performed six surgical missions working with the group Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in addition to other surgical work in developing countries.  He was formerly on the faculty of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine from 1993-1997 and 2001-2008.
