Outbreak at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History: From emergence to global spread

In this presentation, curator Sabrina Sholts will provide an overview of the ongoing exhibit Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, including its development, partnerships, production, and programming. She will discuss the importance of the One Health message of the exhibition and tools that NMNH developed to spread this message worldwide, such a do-it-yourself version of the exhibit (called Outbreak DIY) that has been used at least 200 times in nearly 50 countries to date. The challenges of responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and its impacts on Outbreak initiatives will also be discussed.
Sabrina Sholts is a Curator of Biological Anthropology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) since 2014. Her research uses museum collections to study interconnections of human, animal, and environmental health in the past and present. She received her PhD in Anthropology at UC Santa Barbara and was a postdoctoral researcher in Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley and in Biophysics and Biochemistry at Stockholm University. She is a World Economic Forum Young Scientist and the Lead Curator of the Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World exhibition at NMNH.
From overseas epidemics to the Smithsonian Exhibit proposal

Photos and stories of working overseas with international colleagues and patients during epidemics will be shown leading up to the proposal in August 2014 to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History for the Exhibit 2018-2022 on Zoonotic Viral epidemics. Dr. Dan Lucey proposed the unifying theme of: One Health.
Daniel Lucey MD, MPH is an infectious disease and public health physician who has focused on "pan-epidemics" from HIV to SARS, Avian Flu, MERS, Ebola, Zika, Yellow Fever, Plague, SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, and "What's Next?", "Disease X & Y".
